Searching after hot new travel destinations ? Victoria Falls may be the place you are thinking about. The absolute best way to round out any day in Victoria Falls – or in Africa for that reason – is on a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, in a national park, with sundowners. Whilst all activity operators offer a Zambezi river cruise option (often as an add-on), the Zambezi Explorer is just in a class above the rest. The top two decks are restricted in customers to ensure everyone has a riverside seat. Waiters serve unlimited drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and a variety of canapes (it’s practically a dinner cruise!) are served throughout the 3 hour round trip. From the boat you see hippos and crocodiles – and if you’re lucky – elephants and giraffes too! This is hand’s down one of my favorite experiences in the whole of Africa and one of the best spots for viewing a Zambezi river sunsets.

Soaring over the falls in a helicopter or microlight aircraft is surely the best way to really appreciate the magnitude of this incredible natural wonder of the world. It’s also a great way to snap some amazing photographs, which is why it appeals to me. And I think it’s still likely to get your heart rate up, if only from excitement as you see the real force of this vast body of water pouring itself over the edge of the gorge. Prices vary on length of time, with the cheapest option being the 12-13 minute Flight of the Angels trip in a helicopter and the most expensive being the 30 minute Microlight flight. Zimbabwe used to be the side to stay on, with its classic colonial-style Victoria Falls Hotel located a short distance from the falls (even if you don’t stay there, you can still drop in for a very British high tea), and better views of the falls in general. But Zimbabwe has had well publicized civil strife under the iron rule of Robert Mugabe, and Zambia has been the beneficiary; it’s attracting an increasing number of tourists, even though Zimbabwe’s town of Victoria Falls has stepped up its police presence and made the area safer.

Devil’s Pool – Swim on the Edge of Victoria Falls: Splash in a rock pool on the very edge of Victoria Falls! This exciting and unique Vic Falls activity is definitely one of the best. You can take a guided trip to Devil’s Pool from the Zambian side of Vic Falls (see Livingstone tour departures). This is one of the best spots for marvelling at Vic Falls. Plus, splashing in the pool is a thrilling and invigorating way to admire the natural wonder. The Devil’s Pool activity is only done during the dry season (from about September to December) and/or when water levels are low enough for swimming. You take a boat to Livingstone Island (Zambia) above Vic Falls and from there you walk over rocks and swim to get to Devil’s Pool. Once at the pool on the precipice you need to jump in from the rocks above it. The guides help keep you safe and can hold onto your legs as you lie over the rocky wall on the edge, peering into the misty gorge below. The drop from Devil’s Pool is over 100 metres, so this activity isn’t for the faint-hearted! Find additional info at https://visitfalls.com/.
